Fishing Creek Residence

It’s not everyday that you get work on a project such as this one. The client had recently purchased this waterfront property with thoughts of turning the rear yard into a private outdoor living space. The clients list of must haves included a swimming pool with spa, water feature, flagstone patio, stone walls, fire place, summer kitchen, outdoor shower, access from the family room, lighting, irrigation, and plantings.

The location of the pool and spa lent itself perfect for a vanishing edge. A two foot cut had to be carefully completed along the waters edge while maintaining a safe distance from the existing tree which would become a future focal point. The pool and spa was elevated two feet from the patio to accomplish the vanishing edge. The landscape along the side of the pool explodes to life with Laminair jets with fiber optic lighting for evening enjoyment. Dry stacked Tennessee ashlar stone was used to veneer the pool beam, raised planters, fire place, summer kitchen and sitting walls. Bluestone was used to cap these walls while random Pennsylvania flagstone was used for the patio surface. The two-sided fire place was carefully positioned as to allow the fire to be viewed from pool users as well as those dining at the table. The mantle was made from a wood beam out of an 1800’s barn in Virginia. A cedar pergola was designed to define the eating space as well act as mounting surface for lights to be attached for evening enjoyment. A vinyl tongue and groove shower structure was built next to fire place, complete with towel hooks and shelves for soap and shampoo for pool and beach users. A door was added off the main hallway of the house leading to the stairs down to the outdoor room. The summer kitchen complete with a grill, side burner, ice maker, refrigerator, and limestone counter truly make outdoor cooking and eating desirable. An endless sea of color and texture make up the planting spaces surrounding the expansive Hardscape area softening this massive outdoor living space.

The end result of this project left the clients with an area for family and friends to enjoy at any hour the day or night.
